Belmont is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Belmont was founded in 1849 by former citizens of, and land from the bordering towns of Watertown, to the south; Waltham, to the west; and Arlington, then known as West Cambridge, to the north.

Belmont is served directly by two state route designated highways. Route 60, often known as Pleasant Street, runs through the center of town. Route 2 generally marks Belmont's northern border with the adjacent municipality of Arlington. Despite its small size, Belmont has 5 signed exits on Route 2. I-95/MA Route 128, Route 16, Route 3, and Route 20 are all nearby major highways.

 

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Fitchburg Commuter Rail line, as well as its bus and trackless trolley routes, serve Belmont.

The town has two MBTA Commuter Rail rail stations, Waverley and Belmont Center. Belmont is about 16 minutes from the train line's end at Boston's North Station.

Alewife Station, located nearby in Cambridge, is the western terminal of the Red Line, offering access to Boston and the full metropolitan rapid transit system.
