Route 1A runs across the city's eastern outskirts, from South Salem to Swampscott. For all of its length in the city, it runs parallel to Route 114, which runs north from Marblehead until connecting with Route 1A and heading northwest from downtown towards Lawrence. Route 107 also runs through town, entering from Lynn in the city's southwest corner before connecting with Route 114 and terminating at Route 1A. There is no highway access within the city; the closest highway access to Route 128 is along Route 114 in neighboring Peabody.

 

The MBTA Commuter Rail's Newburyport/Rockport Line stops in Salem. The railroad lines are also linked to a section of semi-abandoned freight lines that extend into Peabody, while a former line into Marblehead has been converted into a bike path.

 

Several MBTA Bus routes pass through the city.

 

The Salem Skipper microtransit network was launched by the city of Salem. Via operates the on-demand transit network, which allows riders to share the same vehicle for the same price as an MBTA Bus ticket.

 

The nearest general aviation airport is Beverly Municipal Airport and the nearest commercial airline service for national and international flights is at Boston's Logan International Airport.

 

Salem offers eight charging points for electric vehicles. Four are in the Museum Place Mall near the Peabody Essex Museum, while the other four are in the South Harbor garage across the street from the Salem Waterfront Hotel.
