Haverhill is a mid-sized city in the county of Essex, Massachusetts. Situated 35 miles north of Boston, close to the New Hampshire border, and about 17 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by Atkinson, Groveland, Merrimac, Newton, North Andover, Plaistow, Salem, and West Newbury. Haverhill has an urban vibe that is typically faster than the neighboring suburban districts but not as quick as more densely packed cities.
The lovely and peaceful community of Haverhill is popularly known by the nickname of "Queen Slipper City" because of its history in the shoe industry.

Transportation
Haverhill is located along Interstate 495, which has five exits around the city. Routes 97, 108, 110, 113, and 125 go through town. Highways 108 and 125 both have northern termini at the New Hampshire state line, where they continue as New Hampshire state routes. Except for Route 108, four of the five state routes share at least a section of their highways in town.
Haverhill has two I-495 bridges (the first leading into Methuen), the Comeau Bridge (Railroad Avenue, which leads to the Bradford MBTA station), the Haverhill/Reading Line Railroad Bridge, the Basiliere Bridge (Rtes. 125/Bridge St.), the Bates Bridge (Rtes. 97/113 to Groveland), and the Rocks Village Bridge, which leads to West Newbury, just south of the Merrimack town line.
MBTA Commuter Rail provides service from Boston's North Station with the Haverhill and Bradford stations on its Haverhill/Reading Line. From the same Haverhill station, Amtrak serves Portland, Maine, and Boston's North Station. MVRTA also provides local bus service to Haverhill and beyond.
Lawrence Municipal Airfield in North Andover is the closest small-plane airport. The nearest major airport is Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, while the nearest international airport is Logan International Airport in Boston.
