About Medford

Medford is a city in Middlesex County, 6.7 miles (10.8 km) northwest of downtown Boston on the Mystic River. The city is bordered by Somerville, Stoneham, Malden, Winchester, and Arlington. Medford, which was founded in 1630 as Mistick, was renamed Meadford meaning "the ford by the meadow." It has a high quality of life, minimal crime, and a small-town vibe.

This lovely, gorgeous spot in the woods is part of the Middlesex Fells Reservation and provides panoramic views of the Boston cityscape. The Fells are also home to a diverse array of plant and animal life. Every spring, tourists go to see the lady slippers, and if you're lucky, you could see a red fox or an owl.

This public nature preserve is one of the greatest places for enjoying the Mystic River, with miles of hiking and bike paths, swimming, and boating.

Medford is served by MBTA bus lines 80, 94, 95, 96, 99, 100, 101, 108, 134, and 710, as well as express routes 325 and 326.

 

The city is intersected by Interstate 93, which runs roughly north-south across it. State highways 16, 28, 38, and 60 all pass through Medford.
