About Winchester

Winchester is a "small" town in Middlesex County, 8.2 miles (13.2 km) north of downtown Boston as part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. Winchester borders the towns of Woburn, Stoneham, Medford, Arlington, and Lexington.

Winchester, being one of the founding colonies of the United States, has a rich history equal to that of the adjacent big city. Winchester developed into the charming suburb that it is today.

Things To Do in Winchester

The reservation contains about 100 miles (160 km) of hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding routes.

Beanstalk Adventure is a great kid-friendly activity in Winchester. A large ropes course with two levels, one 12 feet high and the other 24 feet high. This attraction also features the BeanSprout course, which is appropriate for children aged 2 to 7.

The Griffin Museum of Photography is a nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the art of photography. 

Winchester Public Schools

There are five elementary schools in Winchester (Ambrose, Lincoln, Lynch, Muraco, and Vinson-Owen), one middle school, McCall Middle School, and one high school Winchester High School which is considered one of Boston's elite public high schools.

Parks and Recreation

The Winchester Recreation Department offers a wide variety of seasonal recreation programming year-round.  In addition to recreation programming, the department also oversees use of all town-owned fields, parks, outdoor tennis, and basketball courts. 

Transportation

Wedgemere and Winchester Center are "Zone 1" stops on the MBTA Commuter Rail Lowell Line. The stations are conveniently located within walking distance of one another. The Lowell Line goes from Lowell to Boston's North Station, where one may connect with the "T", Boston's subway system. The nearby Anderson Regional Transportation Center, located off I-93 (Commerce Way exit), serves as a station for Amtrak's Downeaster train, which travels through New Hampshire and ends in Brunswick, Maine. While passing through Winchester, this train does not stop at either of the town's two train stations.

 

There are bus routes that go through Winchester to surrounding towns including Medford, Arlington, and Cambridge. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Orange Line bus route No. 134 travels between North Woburn and Wellington Station in Medford. The MBTA Red Line bus service No. 350 connects the Burlington Mall to the Alewife station in Cambridge.

 

During rush hour, a commuter express bus travels from Cummings Park in Woburn to Boston. Anderson Regional Transportation Center also features a Logan Express shuttle bus service that runs every 30 minutes to Boston's Logan Airport, as well as a paid shuttle service to Manchester New Hampshire Airport (reservations required in advance)
