About Lowell

Lowell is currently the fifth-largest city in Massachusetts, recently surpassed by Cambridge over the past several years. It borders the towns of Dracut, Tewksbury, Billerica, Chelmsford, and Tyngsborough. The border with Billerica is in the Concord River where Lowell and Billerica meet Tewksbury and Chelmsford.

Lowell is also home to its own University of Massachusetts campus offering 4-year degrees and a variety of certification programs.

Things To Do in Lowell

Lowell Heritage State Park offers two miles of waterfront along the Merrimack River where residents can go swimming, boating, or simply enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest is so enormous that it sprawls across three cities, especially Lowell, Dracut, and nearby Tyngsboro. With six miles of trails and more than 1,000 acres of forest, the area is known for its excellent hiking options. If you choose not to walk on foot then you may also bike through the forest and horseback riding is also offered here. Skiing and snowmobiling are common winter activities in the park.

The Lowell Summer Concert Series and the Lowell Folk Festival are held each summer in Boarding House Park, a public park and outdoor music venue in the heart of Lowell.

Lowell Public Schools is above average. Lowell High School is the district public high school. Non-district public schools include Greater Lowell Technical High School, Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School, Lowell Community Charter Public School, and Lowell Collegiate Charter School. Transportation

Interstate 495 in the United States leads to Lowell via car. The city is traversed by Route 3, the Lowell Connector, and Massachusetts Routes 3A, 38, 110, 113, and 133; Route 133 starts where Routes 110 and 38 diverge just south of the Merrimack River.

 

Lowell is served by the Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA), which provides fixed-route bus services and paratransit services to the city and surrounding area. OurBus has a daily bus service to Worcester and New York City. Other service includes Merrimack Vallery Regional Transfer Authority (MVRTA) Route 41 to Lawrence and the Coach Company bus to Foxwoods Resort Casino.

 

Lowell is also served at Lowell station by the MBTA's commuter rail Lowell Line, with several departures daily to and from Boston's North Station.

 

In addition to several car rental agencies, Lowell has four Zipcar rental locations convenient to Gallagher Terminal, the Downtown, and the three UMass Lowell campuses (North, South and East).
